Police encourage drivers to ‘think twice’ about breaking the law
Hundreds of drivers have responded to a Gwent Police call to arms to clamp down on irresponsible and dangerous driving.
Operation Snap is a Wales-wide scheme encouraging members of the public to send in their footage of driving offences such as speeding or dangerous driving. It is a police response to the increasing submissions of video and photographic evidence from members of the public in relation to driving offences they have witnessed.
The scheme hopes to take advantage of what is called the ‘observer effect’ – that motorists may think twice about breaking the law if they know other drivers could record, and report, their offences.
Evidence can be submitted in the form of still photographs or video footage. A still photograph may be acceptable to prove an offence of using a mobile phone but video footage would be required for an offence of failing to stop at a red light.
