National Highways begins Red-X awareness programme
National Highways has upgraded enforcement cameras on smart motorways with the technology necessary to enable police to enforce Red X signals, to help improve compliance.
It has been an offence for more than two decades to drive in a lane closed by a Red X signal.
In 2019 the government changed the law to enable police to use these cameras to enforce the offence, and drivers can receive three points plus a £100 fine.
Police forces are now actively using the cameras to enforce compliance.
National Highways is delivering another national marketing campaign on Red X to further raise awareness with drivers about the need to comply with the signals. This campaign forms part of its wider strategy to raise understanding among motorists of the features of smart motorways.
