Don’t take a risk this spring, says TyreSafe

TyreSafe is asking drivers to not take a chance on their tyre safety this spring by performing checks every month and before long journeys. The UK’s tyre safety charity has launched its Spring campaign; ahead of a number of bank holidays which typically see a sharp rise in weekend breaks, longer staycations and visits to friends and family.

As well as additional traffic, this means vehicles are likely to be more heavily loaded. Tyresafe believes its campaign slogan, Do you drive and hope?, is a bold but important question for motorists who ‘may not even give any consideration to their tyres as the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road’.

To help drivers remember the three vital checks, TyreSafe uses the acronym ACT – air pressure, condition and tread.

TyreSafe is also urging all motorists to ensure they have adequate breakdown cover, and in the event that they experience a tyre related incident on a motorway or dual carriageway, not to attempt to replace or repair the tyre. Instead, the advice is to step away from the vehicle to a safe place and await assistance.

On all other roads, TyreSafe says only change or repair a tyre if it is safe to do so.

Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe chair, said: “This spring is likely to see record breaking numbers of vehicles taking to the roads to make the most of the additional bank holiday. It’s a wonderful time of year as many people take the extra leave from work to spend time with loved ones and explore.

“The last thing drivers want is an unnecessary interruption to their journey, or at worst a catastrophe, which can be so easily avoided by performing simple checks. It only takes a few minutes and could be the difference between a cracking long weekender and a bank holiday nightmare.”
