have a safe T.R.i.P. this winter
Following previous seasonal waves of its T.R.I.P. campaign, National Highways has ‘soft launched’ its winter 2024/25 campaign. With winter typically bringing a worsening in weather conditions, the organisation is focusing on the ‘prepare’ element of the T.R.I.P. acronym, with a call to action for drivers to undertake thorough planning to ensure safe journeys.
Visibility and road conditions can also deteriorate rapidly during winter. One in three (30%) UK drivers have been involved in a collision or a near-miss on the motorway or a major A road, and of those, 34% feel that weather conditions were a contributing factor. (Source: Walnut, November 2024).
Pre-journey checks will help reduce the large number of avoidable and costly motorway breakdowns that occur on motorways every day, according to National Highways.
As part of having a Safe T.R.I.P. drovers should complete the following checks:
- Top-Up: check fuel/battery, oil and screen-wash levels
- Rest: plan to stop every two hours on a long journey
- Inspect: tyre pressure and tread before you set off
- Prepare: for all weather conditions
