AI contributes to road safety
Insights derived from RoadTrace – a technological solution developed by Aisin – are proving ‘pivotal’ in mitigating traffic collisions in various locations across the UK and Europe. RoadTrace harnesses the power of connected vehicle data, extracted using AI techniques, to anticipate collisions before they happen.
The technology is moving towards also being able to assess road condition, building on the harsh braking, average speeds and traffic flow insights which are currently available. Over the past 20 months, RoadTrace has been piloting with National Highways as well as numerous local and county highway authorities in the UK.
In Blackpool, the authority began using the RoadTrace data at the start of 2022 and has now become a government case study (page 28). Speaking at the time, Neil McArdle, senior highways asset management officer at Blackpool Council, said: “We are continuously looking for ways to make our roads safer and part of this is finding the most innovative ways to maximise efficiency.”
