EU road deaths down 3% in 2024 – European Transport Safety Council statement

ETSC

Brussels – The European Commission has published annual road death figures for 2024.

Reacting to the new data, Antonio Avenoso, Executive Director of the European Transport Safety Council said:

“We’re pleased to see road deaths decrease in the EU last year. But a mere 3% reduction in 2024 is far from enough. The EU’s target to halve road deaths by 2030 is now at serious risk.

While new standards and mandatory technologies like automated emergency braking have boosted motor vehicle safety, the EU and Member States must ramp up efforts to improve infrastructure, especially for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. The next EU budget is a great opportunity to prioritise projects that put the safety of all road users front and centre.”
