What are the rules on Red X signals?
National Highways has upgraded enforcement cameras on smart motorways with the technology necessary to enable police to enforce Red X signals, to help improve compliance. It has been an offence for more than two decades to drive in a lane closed by a Red X signal. In 2019 the government changed the law to enable police to use these cameras to enforce the offence, and drivers can receive three points plus a £100 fine. Police forces are now actively using the cameras to enforce compliance.
More information on the rules can be found at National Highways.
